Bollinger Bands Analysis

Bollinger Bands are among the most misread indicators. Price touching the upper band does not mean sell, and touching the lower band does not mean buy — in a strong trend price can walk along a band for days. The real information lives in the distance between the bands.

How the bands are built

The middle band is a 20-period simple moving average. The upper and lower bands sit two standard deviations away from it. Band width therefore reflects the recent dispersion of price directly: as volatility rises the bands open, as it falls they contract.

This makes Bollinger Bands a volatility indicator, not a direction indicator. Direction has to come from another layer — EMA structure or ADX.

The right way to compare band width

Band width is not comparable across markets. Measured on daily charts, crypto assets show far wider values than Borsa Istanbul shares. A fixed threshold therefore fails: “width below X means a squeeze” never triggers on crypto, while “above Y means risky” tags every crypto card as risky.

The tool consequently uses the asset’s own percentile over its last 120 bars rather than the absolute number. That makes “unusually narrow for this asset” a statement with real content, and puts three very different markets on one comparable scale.

What a squeeze announces, and what it doesn’t

Contracting bands show that volatility has fallen and energy is accumulating. Historically, squeezes tend to be followed by expansions. A squeeze, however, says nothing about direction: price can break either way.

So a squeeze alone is not a reason to act. Volume behaviour, trend structure and which level breaks must be read together to establish direction. When the analysis detects a squeeze it states this distinction explicitly.

Touching a band versus breaking one

In a strong uptrend price can spend days at or above the upper band; this is called a band walk and indicates trend strength, not a sell signal. The same applies to the lower band in a downtrend.

A reversal reading gains meaning only when price closes back inside the band after exceeding it, especially if momentum is weakening in the same direction. The tool separates these two cases and says which one applies.

Which indicators to read alongside

Bollinger Bands pair well with RSI: when price pushes above the upper band while RSI is in overbought territory and falling, that mismatch is a signal. Read with ATR, they help set a more realistic stop distance.

Trend structure comes from EMA order and ADX. The bands add a volatility layer on top of that structure; used alone they leave you with information that has no direction attached.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I sell when price touches the upper band?

No, this is the classic misreading. In strong trends price can walk along the band. A reversal reading only gains meaning when price closes back inside the band and momentum weakens in the same direction.

Does a Bollinger squeeze indicate direction?

No. A squeeze announces reduced volatility and a likely expansion, but not which way it will break. Direction must come from volume, trend structure and the level that breaks.

Which settings are used?

A 20-period average with two standard deviations, the most common configuration. Band width is additionally compared with the asset’s percentile over its last 120 bars.

Do Bollinger Bands work on crypto?

They do, but the thresholds differ: bands are typically far wider on crypto assets. That is why the asset’s position relative to its own history is used instead of an absolute width.

Do band width and ATR measure the same thing?

Both measure volatility, differently. ATR measures the average bar range, band width the dispersion of closes. ATR suits stop distances; band width suits identifying squeeze and expansion phases.
