RSI Analysis for Stocks and Crypto
RSI is the most used and most misread indicator in technical analysis. Understanding what its 0-100 scale actually measures is the difference between a useful momentum gauge and a reflex to sell every strong week.

What the 0-100 scale is measuring
The Relative Strength Index compares the average size of recent gains with the average size of recent losses, usually over fourteen periods, and maps the ratio onto a bounded scale from 0 to 100. Fifty is the point where average gains and average losses are equal.
Two things follow from that definition. RSI describes the character of recent closes, not whether an asset is cheap or expensive. And because the scale is bounded, it compresses at the ends: the difference between 85 and 90 represents a far larger imbalance than the difference between 50 and 55.
Why 70 and 30 are conventions, not signals
The thresholds are a convention from the indicator’s original publication, not a property of markets. They mark where an imbalance has become pronounced, and pronounced imbalances are exactly what strong trends produce.
A more honest reading is that RSI above 70 means buyers have dominated recent closes. Whether that ends is a question about trend strength and about the levels overhead, and neither of those is inside the RSI calculation.
Why RSI stays extreme in strong trends
In a strong trend the denominator of the calculation collapses. If almost every bar closes higher, the average loss over the lookback becomes tiny, and RSI is pinned near the top of its range simply because there is nothing on the other side of the ratio.
This is why RSI can hold above 70 for weeks in a persistent uptrend, and why selling every reading above 70 in such a trend is the single most expensive habit built on this indicator. In a strong trend, an extreme RSI is a description of the trend, not a warning about it.
Divergence and what it is worth
Divergence occurs when price makes a higher high while RSI makes a lower high, or the mirror image at a low. It says the second push was made with less force than the first, which is genuine information about the quality of the move.
What it is not is a timing tool. Divergences can repeat two or three times before price responds at all, and in a powerful trend they can persist without ever resolving. Treat divergence as a reason to tighten risk, not as an entry trigger by itself.
The context RSI needs
RSI becomes far more usable once you know whether a trend exists. ADX below roughly 20 suggests a range, and in a range the 70 and 30 zones behave much closer to their textbook description. Above 25 a trend is in place and the extremes should be discounted accordingly.
Pair it with structure as well. RSI at 72 into a resistance zone that has been tested repeatedly is a very different situation from RSI at 72 in open space above all recent highs.
How Bubixo reads RSI
RSI is computed on the server as one of more than twenty indicators, and the model receives its value together with the trend strength and structural readings around it rather than in isolation — which is what stops it from reporting an extreme as an automatic reversal.
The Opportunity Radar treats it the same way. Its momentum sub-score is built on the distance of RSI from 50, but the contribution is deliberately pulled back at the extremes, because a reading stretched to the edge of the scale is a risk factor rather than an opportunity.
Frequently Asked Questions
What RSI period does Bubixo use?
The standard 14-period calculation, applied to whichever timeframe you select. That means a 14-period RSI on the weekly chart covers fourteen weeks, so the same indicator answers a very different question depending on the timeframe.
Is RSI over 70 a sell signal?
Not by itself. It means buyers have dominated recent closes, which is exactly what a strong trend looks like. In a trending market RSI can stay above 70 for weeks; whether the move ends depends on trend strength and on the resistance overhead, not on the number alone.
How reliable is RSI divergence?
It is meaningful as a statement about momentum quality and unreliable as a timing tool. Divergences frequently repeat several times before price reacts and can fail entirely in a powerful trend, so they are better used to manage risk than to open a position.
Does RSI work the same on crypto?
The calculation is identical, but the practical thresholds are looser. Crypto trends routinely hold RSI in extreme territory for extended stretches, so reading the value relative to the asset’s own recent behaviour matters more than applying a fixed 70 or 30 rule.
Can I analyse a symbol using RSI alone?
You can look at it alone, but the tool will not. Every Bubixo analysis reads RSI alongside MACD, the moving average stack, volume, volatility and the support and resistance zones, because an oscillator without trend context is the easiest indicator in the set to misread.
