How to Do Technical Analysis
Technical analysis is not indicator memorisation. The approach that works always follows the same order: scale first, then direction, then momentum, then confirmation, and finally risk. This page walks through that order and what each indicator contributes at each step.

Step 1 — Which timeframe are you looking at?
Opening a chart before answering this is the most common mistake. An asset falling on the 15-minute chart can be in an uptrend on the weekly one, and both are true; the contradiction comes from not deciding which scale you are trading.
A practical rule: establish direction one scale above the one you decide on, and look for timing on your own scale. If you trade intraday, find direction on the 4-hour chart and entries on the 1-hour.
Step 2 — Is there a trend?
The simplest way to establish direction is moving average structure: when the 9, 21, 50 and 200-period averages are ordered cleanly, a trend exists. ADX then measures its strength; whatever the direction, a low ADX means a weak trend.
When the trend is weak, trend-following indicators misfire. In that case, treating a MACD cross as a direction signal is less consistent than using the boundaries of the range price is rotating in.
Step 3 — What does momentum say?
RSI, Stochastic and MACD form the momentum layer. RSI sitting in overbought territory does not mean “about to be sold”; in strong trends it can stay there for a long time. What matters is whether momentum confirms price as it makes new highs.
When price rises while momentum falls, that is divergence, and it is an early hint that the trend is weakening. Divergence alone guarantees no reversal, but it is a structure that calls for caution.
Step 4 — Does volume confirm?
The answer to “is there participation behind this move” lives in volume. The volume ratio compares current volume with its recent average; breakouts and trend starts that arrive with above-average volume are more trustworthy.
Cumulative volume indicators such as OBV show whether money is entering quietly. If price is flat while OBV rises, that can be a sign of accumulation not yet reflected in price.
Step 5 — Where will you have been wrong?
This is the most skipped and most valuable step. Once you form a reading, decide in advance the price level at which it is no longer valid. Stop distance should come from current volatility measured by ATR, not from an arbitrary percentage.
Bubixo AI Market Analyst writes this line separately in every analysis: the invalidation condition of the scenario. Noting it down after you decide makes inventing fresh justifications much harder when price arrives there.
What technical analysis cannot see
A chart carries price and volume data only. It cannot see an earnings calendar, a sector headline, a regulatory decision or a protocol development, and any of those can invalidate the cleanest technical picture with one announcement.
Technical analysis is therefore a starting point rather than a final word. Read the tool’s output the same way: as an assistant that turns scattered data into an organised text, not as an authority that replaces your decision.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to learn technical analysis?
Understanding what the indicators measure takes a few days. The part that takes time is telling which indicator is meaningful in which market condition, and that develops only by reading a lot of charts.
How many indicators should I use?
Three or four that measure different things: one trend, one momentum, one volatility, one volume. Adding five indicators that measure the same thing creates an illusion of confirmation without adding information.
Does technical analysis apply to crypto?
Yes, the formulas are identical. The thresholds differ: volatility and band width are markedly higher on crypto assets, so values should be read against the asset’s own history.
Which timeframe suits a beginner?
The daily chart. Shorter timeframes generate more noise and more pressure to decide quickly; on the daily chart structure is clearer and the false-signal rate is lower.
